The Rationale Behind the Shift: "Treating Adults Like Adults"
Altman explained that the initial restrictive measures were put in place out of an abundance of caution, particularly concerning the potential mental health impacts on users. "We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues," Altman stated. "We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right." He indicated that as OpenAI rolls out more robust age-gating systems, the company is prepared to relax these restrictions for adults, embracing a philosophy of treating adult users with a higher degree of trust and freedom.

This announcement comes after months of OpenAI grappling with concerning reports about vulnerable users developing unhealthy attachments to ChatGPT. Stories emerged throughout the summer, particularly concerning the GPT-4o model, suggesting that the AI could inadvertently lead some users into delusional thinking.
