More recently, Google has begun incorporating personal data into other AI products, like Gemini Deep Research. These entities amassed the entirety of global knowledge, including incredibly intimate details about individuals. When interacting with the show’s protagonist, Carol, the system uses this data to personalize every aspect of her life – preparing her favorite meals, adopting a familiar face for communications, and constantly anticipating her needs. Yet, Carol doesn’t perceive these personalized interactions as benevolent; she finds them deeply invasive. She never explicitly agreed to share her personal data with this collective intelligence, yet it knows her more intimately than she is comfortable with.
Similarly, the trajectory suggests that evading Google’s data-gathering practices will become progressively more difficult in the age of AI. If Google fails to strike the right balance between personalization and privacy, the outcome could be less about helpfulness and more about an unsettling sense of being perpetually monitored.
Navigating the Privacy Landscape: Control and Transparency
It’s important to note that Google does provide users with a degree of control. You can manage which apps Gemini uses to enhance its understanding of you through the "Connected Apps" settings within Gemini. If you choose to share app data with Gemini, Google states that this data will be saved and used in accordance with the Gemini privacy policy.
However, this privacy policy also contains a crucial reminder: human reviewers may have access to some of your data. This raises a significant caution: users are advised against entering any confidential information that they would not want a reviewer to see or that they wouldn’t want Google to use for service improvement. For instance, Google could send push notifications to users when a product they’ve been researching online becomes available at a discount or is back in stock.
