Leveraging this, Reddit was able to train an AI model on millions of content moderation decisions. According to AWS, the resulting AI model developed a sophisticated "social intuition" and is now instrumental in moderating content across its vast network of online communities, demonstrating tangible real-world benefits.

Navigating the AI Hype Cycle: A Grounded Approach to Investment

While Amazon is making substantial bets on AI, Garman remains circumspect about the broader industry’s sometimes-frenetic exuberance. He expresses skepticism towards early-stage AI labs that have secured multi-billion dollar investments despite not yet deploying widely adopted products. "When people talk about a bubble, I think those are the deals that are most at risk," Garman remarked, referring to AI startups with astronomical valuations and minimal tangible output. "Where it’s a $3 billion valuation for a startup with no lines of code. Maybe, but maybe not. Those are the ones where I think there’s open questions."

In contrast, Garman asserts that AWS’s AI investments are firmly rooted in tangible growth and demand. The company has added 3.8 gigawatts of new infrastructure capacity in the past 12 months and has announced a significant up to $50 billion investment in US government AI data centers. Amazon reports that new capacity is being sold as quickly as it comes online, a clear indicator of sustained demand. "I see the value that so many companies are getting out of AI today, and I don’t see that there’s any pullback," Garman concluded. "They’re getting real returns. They’re delivering real value to their customers. And so for us, that is a good signal, and we’re still in the early stages of what that value is going to be."
