THE ESSENTIALS IN 30 SECONDS

  • Google announced on October 29, 2026 that the Gemini app can generate, preview and edit files directly in a conversation.
  • Supported formats include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text and code.
  • The feature is open to all users in every language Gemini supports, but on mobile only PDFs can be previewed and edited.

Google has extended the Gemini app so that files it creates no longer have to leave the conversation to be corrected. In a post published on October 29, the company said users can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and other files directly within a chat.

How the editor works

A file produced by Gemini can be opened in a full-screen view, where the user types changes directly, as in a regular editor, instead of asking the assistant to rewrite the whole thing. Users can also select a passage and either ask Gemini a question about it or request a revision of the text or the visuals. Google's example is a student who uploads handwritten lecture notes, has them turned into a PDF study guide, then adjusts it by hand and highlights sections for Gemini to rework. In a demonstration described by Chrome Unboxed, a highlighted table was converted into a bar chart after a short instruction typed into a floating "Describe changes" bar.

The formats named by Google are PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text files and code. Chrome Unboxed reports that a menu in the top bar lets users save a file locally as a PDF or send it to Google Drive; Google's own announcement does not detail export options.

Availability and limits

According to Google, the capability is available to all users in every language in which the Gemini app is offered. The announcement does not mention any subscription requirement. There is an important platform split, however: PDF preview and editing work on both the web and mobile, while every other format can only be edited in the web version of Gemini. Google gave no date for bringing the other formats to its mobile apps, and it did not mention file size limits.

Building on file generation

The update follows a step Google took in April 2026, when it allowed Gemini to generate downloadable files in formats including Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, LaTeX, RTF and Markdown, which could be downloaded or sent to Drive. That earlier feature produced finished files; the new editor targets the back-and-forth that usually follows, letting small fixes be made where the draft was created rather than in a separate application.

For users, the practical value will depend on how well manual edits and AI revisions coexist in the same file, and on whether the richer formats reach mobile devices.
