THE ESSENTIALS IN 30 SECONDS
- Meta confirmed the purchase of Conductor but disclosed no price or terms.
- Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20; the local Mac app gets updates until early 2027.
- Conductor did not build its own agents: it orchestrated third-party ones such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.
Meta has acquired Conductor, a young AI coding startup, in a deal first reported by Axios on November 4. Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch but gave no further details, and neither side has disclosed the price or terms. Conductor announced the news on its website under the headline "Conductor is joining Meta".
What Conductor built
Conductor was founded in 2024 by Charlie Holtz, its chief executive, and Jackson de Campos, its chief technology officer; SiliconANGLE reports that the company was originally incorporated as Melty Inc. Its product does not include an agent of its own. Instead, it lets a developer launch several existing coding agents at the same time, each working in an isolated copy of the codebase, and then review and merge what they produce. The supported agents include Anthropic's Claude Code, OpenAI's Codex and Cursor, with users paying through their own subscriptions and API keys.
The startup offered a Mac desktop app and Conductor Cloud, which runs agents in sandboxed virtual machines that can keep working for hours and can be monitored from a phone. According to SiliconANGLE, Conductor raised a $22 million Series A in March from Spark Capital and Matrix, and says more than 100,000 people use the product. At that funding round it listed Meta among the companies whose engineers already relied on it.
A rapid wind-down
The acquisition means the end of the current product. Conductor's announcement sets out a timetable: new sign-ups and downloads stopped on November 4, with existing Pro users keeping paid features for free. Conductor Cloud becomes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, when deletion of cloud user data begins. Active subscribers are being refunded, and users can export their data or move cloud workspaces to their Mac beforehand. The local app will keep receiving new models and critical fixes until early 2027, after which the company says all user data will be deleted. Conductor states that it has never sold user data or trained on it.
What Meta gets
Holtz wrote that he looks forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, who heads product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, according to TechCrunch. He also hinted at a new offering for customers early next year, without describing it. Neither company has said what roles the team will take. Citing Axios, SiliconANGLE reports that Meta hopes the team's speed will help it build its next generation of coding tools. Meta already has its own coding agent, Muse Code, launched in August, and released the open-weight Muse Spark Open model in October.
