BEST FOR

  • Everyday questions and drafting with a Google Account
  • Deep Research reports and Canvas documents
  • Working with Gmail, Maps, YouTube and other Google apps

What it does

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Even the free tier includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice conversations, Canvas and custom "Gems". With permission, Connected Apps let it draw on Google services such as Gmail, Maps, Flights, Hotels and YouTube. It is available on the web at gemini.google.com, in Android and iOS apps, and in desktop apps for Windows 10 or later and for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later. Some features vary by country, language, device and account type; work and school accounts lose some mobile features.

Pricing and plans

Google's subscription page (US region, prices shown with a "$" sign) lists:

  • Free: $0 with a Google Account, including 15 GB of storage and limited access to the Flow video tool.
  • Google AI Plus: $4.99/month, about twice the free usage, video generation and 400 GB of storage.
  • Google AI Pro: $19.99/month, about four times the free usage and 5 TB of storage.
  • Google AI Ultra: from $99.99/month, with a $199.99/month tier offering higher limits.
  • Gemini Enterprise: from $21 USD per seat per month for businesses.

Prices and features vary by country and taxes may apply. Google says subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, without refunds for partial periods except where the law requires them.

Strengths and limits

  • Close integration with Google's own services and a broad feature set on the free plan.
  • Usage limits are expressed as multiples of the free tier rather than fixed counts.
  • Privacy: Google states that a subset of chats is read by human reviewers and that reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. With Keep Activity on, chats can be used to improve services, including model training; with it off, chats are still stored for 72 hours. Google advises not to enter confidential information.
