THE ESSENTIALS IN 30 SECONDS

  • Reddit's Q3 2026 shareholder letter says the company is shifting to a logged-in-only experience, with full tests starting in Q4 in select markets outside the US.
  • Search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average in October; Reddit warns daily users could drop by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4 if the trend continues.
  • Q3 revenue rose 53% year on year to $895 million, while daily active uniques were 130.3 million and US users fell 2%.

Reddit intends to put most of its content behind an account. In its third-quarter 2026 letter to shareholders, published with its earnings on October 29, the company said it is moving to a logged-in-only experience, with full testing beginning this quarter in select markets outside the United States.

Why Reddit is changing course

The trigger is a sharp drop in visitors arriving from search engines. Reddit says search referral traffic fell meaningfully in the third quarter, with the decline accelerating toward the end of the period and hitting logged-out web visitors hardest. In October, referrals were down by more than 1 million per week on average. If that continues, the company warns that daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from a base of about 130 million.

TechCrunch links the decline to the spread of AI-generated summaries that answer queries without sending users to the underlying pages, a trend affecting publishers across the web. Reddit's letter argues that AI search addresses a different need than its communities, but lists protecting access to its "extremely valuable corpus of data" among the reasons for the switch, alongside better personalization, richer ad-targeting signals and adapting to new regulations. According to 9to5Google, CEO Steve Huffman said most unauthorized access to Reddit data happens through logged-out pages.

Strong finances, shrinking US audience

The announcement came alongside solid results. Revenue rose 53% year on year to $895 million and net income grew 74% to $283 million. Daily active uniques reached 130.3 million, up 12% from a year earlier, but US users declined 2% while international users grew 24%. Reddit says logged-in and app users, who account for more than 80% of monetization, grew in the quarter.

What is still unclear

Reddit has not given a date for a global rollout and says the tests will shape the final version. It has not detailed what logged-out visitors will still be able to see; Huffman described the logged-out front page as useful and important, according to 9to5Google. The company also says it is rebuilding an incognito mode in its app so that users can browse without revealing their identity. In a Reddit post cited by TechCrunch, Huffman acknowledged that many questions remain unanswered, particularly about where the line between the two experiences should fall.
