What it does

DeepL is a machine translation service. DeepL Translator handles typed text, whole documents and text in images, with options such as formality settings, alternative phrasings, a dictionary and a customisation hub for glossaries, style rules and translation memories. DeepL Write is a separate assistant that corrects spelling and grammar, proposes better word choices and adjusts style and tone; its product page lists English, German, French and Spanish. DeepL is available on the web, as desktop apps for Windows and macOS, as mobile apps for iOS and Android (with photo and voice translation), as browser extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, through a Microsoft 365 integration and via an API.

Pricing and plans

The free version allows 50,000 characters per user per month, one file translation per month up to 5 MB and a single small glossary. DeepL Pro is sold in several tiers. As displayed for Germany with annual billing and VAT included, Individual costs €7.49 per month (300,000 characters, three files a month), Team costs €24.99 per user per month and Business €49.99 per user per month, with higher file and glossary limits; Enterprise is priced on request. Write Pro is an add-on at €6.99 per user per month on the lower tiers and is listed as included in Business. The pricing page shown did not list monthly-billing prices, and amounts differ by country, currency and tax.

Strengths and limits

DeepL focuses on translation quality controls that matter to professionals: glossaries, tone settings, document translation and, on Pro, the ability to edit translated documents. For paying customers, it says texts are stored only temporarily as needed for processing and are never used to train its models, and it cites ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certification; these commitments are described for Pro, so free users should check the terms that apply to them. The free tier's character and file caps are tight for regular work; the Write product page lists only four languages.
